SANTA BARBARA COUNTY — November 5, 2026. Caltrans District 5 plans to begin a $1 million vegetation management project along State Route 154 on Friday, November 6, with weekday one-way traffic control expected to continue during work through approximately January 8, 2027.
Where is the work?
Crews will remove brush and roadside vegetation along an approximately 40-mile stretch of Highway 154 from the Highway 101/154 junction toward the area just west of the Highway 192 junction. Caltrans schedules alternating one-way traffic control Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., with potential delays of up to 15 minutes.
Fire risk reduction, not a reported active fire
The agency says the project supports the state’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan by reducing roadside fuel loads. Crews expect to remove approximately 8,000–10,000 pounds of dense brush per day. The listed contractor is Burn Bot Inc., based in South San Francisco. This is planned fuel reduction, not evidence of a wildfire currently burning on the route.
What drivers should know
Highway 154 is an important alternative route for travelers in Santa Barbara County, including residents and delivery services. Work-zone controls may change with weather. Drivers should follow flaggers and signage rather than assuming a fixed 15-minute wait or a complete closure. Check Caltrans QuickMap before travel.
