SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — October 31, 2026. Drivers who use Garden Street and Micheltorena Street should prepare for a full intersection closure beginning Monday, November 2, while a contractor investigates repairs to Santa Barbara’s Desal Link water pipeline.
The city’s October 22 public notice schedules work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at that intersection. Through traffic will need to follow posted detours and flaggers.
Why the work is necessary
The Desal Link project connects the Charles E. Meyer Desalination Plant with the Cater Water Treatment Plant, allowing the city to move desalinated water through more of its distribution network. The primary pipeline was completed in 2023. According to the city, the current work is warranty testing to identify pipe segments needing repair.
Residents of nearby properties are expected to retain access to their homes, but not through the closed intersection while work is underway. Travelers should allow extra time and follow workers’ directions.
November 2 is the scheduled start, not a promised finish date. The city says repair duration depends on the contractor’s findings during testing. For questions call Principal Engineer Carson Wollert at 805-564-5376.
